Both versions can be used as a children’s party song. I can
see little ones acting out being a tree and having fun together
dancing around as trees.
Background
of Poem & Song |
“If I Were A
Tree” was written when I was the Executive Director of the
Davie/Cooper City, Florida Chamber of Commerce back in 1979. We
had a canal bank that needed beautifying….so, I wrote a brochure
to promote an “Adopt-A-Tree” program Background of Poem & Song
that would add trees to the canal bank. I asked the Lord to give
me a poem to put in the brochure.
Over the years,
since 1979, I have seen a spiritual significance to the poem and
gradually became aware of why God gave it to me.

Is Everything
Why Would Anyone Want To Be A Tree?
Because….
the tree reflects God’s majesty and glory.
A tree, that God plants, is placed by the water and grows tall
and strong.
Here what the prophet of old said about the coming Messiah…
“He will be
like a tree planted by water: it sends its
roots out toward a stream, it doesn't fear when heat
comes, and its foliage remains green. It will not worry
in a year of drought or cease producing fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:8
-
This kind of
tree stands out from all the others so passersby will stop
and take another look.
-
This type of
tree shades the world when it’s hot and muggy.
-
This tree
stands against the howling winds of life.
-
This tree is
kind and giving, offering shelter to God’s feathered
friends.
-
This tree
will sway in a gentle breeze as the seasons change. It does
not give up or fret.
-
This tree
will be there in all kinds of adversity, rain, snow,
sunshine, whatever… because it was planted by God.
Listen to
what God said about man
“And God said,
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the
air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
“So God
created man in his own image, in the image of God created he
him; male and female created he them.”
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and
multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
Genesis 1:26-28
We are
like the tree that God created to reveal His majesty and glory.
We are endowed with strength, compassion, love and all the other
gifts of God’s Spirit. We reveal His very character, as does
nature itself.
